The best swans are Swedish
Inspiration is everywhere, but after working two decades in the entertainment industry I can honestly say that I am mostly influenced by the movies. Whether it is a piece of set design, or a character or sometimes just a mood.
I always love a good comedy or romance, but my favorite movies are those that challenge. I'm a huge fan of David Lynch, Terrence Malik, Martin Scorsese and Darren Aronofsky (just to name a few), so of course this chair would be influenced by the most controversial film of the year: Darren Aronofsky's mother!
This crazy flower print from Swedish textile designer J. Frank reminded me so much of some of the artwork for mother!... minus the bleeding heart.
And then I had this chair, with its swans carved into the arms, it absolutely confirmed that this was a perfect match - Black Swan and mother! coming together on one dark throne.
The chair itself is not very big, but it takes up a lot of space visually. It's a real design commitment!
I usually don't like to work with black at all, in fact I rarely even wear black myself (which was hard to pull off when I lived in Paris and NY), but you can't really put this textile in the same category as black... if I had to categorize it, I would file it in the fluorescent pile.
It's a show stopper of a chair for sure, and I guarantee all of your guests will have an opinion; sometimes positive, sometimes not so much, always polarizing... and that's just how Darren Aronofsky likes it! (now go check out the movie too.)
